Living in Rochedale
Did you know that most of the area now known as Rochedale was originally owned by one family by the name of Roche who took up residence around 1868, they called there homestead "Rochedale", thus the name stuck.
The family originally grew grapes and had a citrus orchard, eventually after World War 1 the surrounding areas were turned over to small crop farming and they eventually went into dairy farming.
There were a couple of attempts in the last century to have a name change, however both times this has been rejected and the area remains known as Rochedale South. The last attempt was made in the late 90's when the Brisbane City Council decided to build a huge waste dump in the area. Residents rejected their suburb being known as a dumping ground for waste, however this was insufficient to warrant a change of name.
